David Russell Coons (’65)

David Russell (Dave) Coons, 78, of Arlington, TX and formerly of Amarillo, TX passed away on January 13, 2021 from COVID related complications. Memorial services will be at 4:00 P.M., Saturday, February 20, 2021, in the Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. David was born in Detroit, MI on July 22, 1942, to Gex and Jessie Coons. David moved with his family to the Los Angeles, California area later in 1942. Younger sister Priscilla joined the family in 1946. In 1960, the Coons family temporarily relocated to Japan for a work assignment. Approximately one year later, David chose to return to the family homestead in the Texas Panhandle to attend college. While attending Amarillo College, he met the love of his life, RuNell Stitt. The couple was married on August 23, 1968 after first completing undergraduate degrees at the University of Houston. David worked as a Television Engineer for Channel 10 for ten years and for Amarillo College (later KACV) from 1975 through his retirement in 2010. He was awarded the Amarillo College Employee of the Year in 1997 and was inducted into the Texas Panhandle Association of Broadcaster’s Hall of Fame in 2004. He was preceded in death by his wife, RuNell Stitt Coons; his mother, Jessie E. Coons; and his father, Gex B. Coons. Survivors include his uncle, Edgar (Ted) Coons; sister, Priscilla; and children, Courtnay VanWhy, Kevin Coons and their respective spouses: Jeff and Amanda. He is further survived by three grandchildren: Emily (10), Parker (9) and Rosemary (4).
