James N. Barkley (’69, ’70)

Rockport, Texas James Neal Barkley, 79, passed away on June 17, 2021, in Rockport, Texas, after a lengthy illness. He was born in Houston, Texas, on June 19, 1941, to Jesse Barkely and Mable Marie Barkley. After serving in the Army in Germany, he returned to Houston where he met his wife, Ann Strader Barkley, to whom he was married for 56 years. Jim and Ann always worked together, having owned several businesses while Jim attended and graduated from the University of Houston and then attended and received his law degree from Thurgood Marshall School of Law in Houston. He practiced law in Houston before and after beinf Judge of Harris County Criminal Court at Law No. 14 for 12 years. Jim and Ann started going to Rockport every weekend in 1998 and made a permanent move there in 2004. Jim had many hobbies during his retirement, including fishing, golfing, photography, woodworking (picture frames), and most recently playing the guitar. He is preceded in death by his mother and father; sister, Frances DeRobbio; nephew, Steven DeRobbio. He is survived by his wife, Ann; sister-in-law, Erin Parker Strader; nephews, Pat Strader, and Kelly Strader. Contributions may be made to Harbor Hospice, 400 Enterprise Blvd., Bldg. C, Rockport, TX. 78382, To Humane Society of Aransas County, P.O. Box 1502, Fulton, TX. 78358, or to charity of your choice. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
