After having graduated from the University of Houston with a B.B.A. degree (concentration in finance) from the UH C.T. Bauer College of Business in 2004, Erik went directly to New York University’s School of Law, setting up entry into a legal profession where minorities have been historically underrepresented. Leveraging his finance background, Erik chose and excelled at finance and business-oriented law classes and subsequently focused on areas of the law that intersect with finance, such as securities law and contract law. His career in these areas spanned both private law firm practice and in-house practice and eventually brought him to the Bank of Montreal’s Times Square office on the 33rd floor of the “H&M” building in Manhattan, where Erik is currently Senior Counsel and Director, focusing on contracts that support the bank’s OTC derivatives trading business. Erik hopes the profiling of his experience and journey will help inspire others to not be afraid or daunted by industries lacking in diversity and that a University of Houston college background and degree can set the stage for success for years, if not decades, to come.
