Andrew William Scholes, lovingly known as “Peewee” to his family and friends, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2026, at the age of 86.
Born on May 29, 1940, in Goliad, Texas,
Andrew lived a life defined by kindness, generosity, faith, and devotion to his family. He was the type of person who never sought attention for himself and instead found his greatest joy in helping others. Those who knew him will remember a man who spent his entire life making sure everyone around him was cared for, supported, and loved.
Andrew is preceded in death by his brothers, Alex Scholes and Owen Scholes, and his sister, Dora Ann Pittman.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, JoAnne Scholes. The two had recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Valentine’s Day, a milestone that reflected a lifetime of love, commitment, and partnership. He is also survived by his son, Andrew John Scholes and his wife, Lauren Scholes; his daughter, Therese Sullivan and her husband, Jay Sullivan; and his cherished grandchildren, Camden Scholes, Beckett Scholes, Nolan Scholes, and Julia Sullivan. He is also survived by his nephews Richard Pittman, Alan Pittman, Michael Pittman, and Alex Scholes III, and his niece Catherine Pittman.
A proud graduate of the University of Houston, Andrew went on to build a long and successful career in accounting, working for Dresser Industries and later for the State of California. He was a dedicated professional, but his greatest accomplishments were never found in an office. From a young age, he helped care for his family, assisting in raising his nephews and helping his parents financially, even paying off their mortgage. Throughout his life, he continued to put the needs of others before his own.
One of Andrew’s favorite stories was about his high school years at St. Thomas High School in Houston. He loved recalling how he would leave school each day and head straight to work at his Uncle Roger’s service station downtown. Those memories stayed with him throughout his life and were stories he never tired of sharing.
Andrew was a true people person. He could strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere, and before long, it felt as though he had known them for years. He loved visiting with friends, family, neighbors, and complete strangers alike. If you stopped to talk with him, you could expect a long conversation and leave feeling like you had made a new friend.
He was also known for his lifelong love of Dr Pepper, a daily tradition that never changed, and for his tremendous love of animals. His faithful dogs-Mandy, Nicky, and Paco-were constant companions who brought him endless happiness throughout the years.
A devoted Catholic, Andrew was a parishioner of St. Thomas More Catholic Church for more than 30 years. He was active with the Knights of Columbus and the Sacred Heart Society, organizations that reflected his lifelong commitment to service, faith, and community.
Above all else, Andrew loved his family. He was a devoted husband, an extraordinary father, and a proud grandfather. He worked tirelessly to ensure his family had everything they needed and never hesitated to sacrifice his own wants for the people he loved. His family will remember him as the most caring and unselfish person they have ever known-a man whose greatest happiness came from making others happy.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 1101 Antoine Drive, Houston, Texas 77055. Funeral services will begin at 3:00 p.m., followed immediately by burial.
The family takes comfort in knowing that Andrew’s gentle spirit, warm smile, and loving heart will remain with them always.
